Resume and Cover Letter Tips

Cover Letter

Have a new cover letter for each job

  • Read about the company and their values and incorporate that within your cover letter
  • The cover letter is the first thing employers will see, they need to make sure your interests and experience align with the job posting and the company
  • Having a new cover letter for each job also ensures that you don’t accidentally put the wrong company name

Include the Hiring Manager’s Name

  • Avoid using generic openings such as “To Whom it May Concern” and make it personalized by including the hiring manager’s first and last name or simply writing “Dear Hiring Manager”

Have a strong opening sentence

  • This is what grabs the hiring managers attention
  • Write about your enthusiasm about applying to the job, the passion for this line of work or your past accomplishments

Go further than your resume

  • Don’t simply repeat your resume but rather, expand on the bullets and provide a deeper explanation of your experiences and accomplishments. This is your opportunity to show why you would be perfect for the job

Highlight relevant experiences

  • Emphasize your past experiences that relate to the job posting and the skills they require

Keep it short and concise

  • Your cover letter should only be a page long with 1-inch margins

Finish Strong

  • Just like the beginning, finishing strong is equally as important. This is your last opportunity to show that you would be great for the company.

Edit

  • Make sure you go over your cover letter a few times to ensure there are no grammatical errors
